“Garryowen” is an old Irish quick-step dating to the early 1600s. Legend has it that Lt.Col. Custer was walking by a saloon where he overheard Irish troopers of the 7th singing the song and liked it so much it adopted it as the official Air (tune) of the newly formed 7th Cavalry Regiment. The name Garryowen also has come to refer to the Regiment and its troopers, and is also used as a greeting among them. In 1981 it became the official tune of the 1st Cavalry Division.
